The Ultimate Fall Landscaping Checklist

Cooler Temps and Pumpkin-flavored drinks mean it’s time to get your landscape and flower beds ready for winter. The right preparation now will save you time and energy when Spring rolls around. Plus, proper landscape care tends to produce more lush and lively results the next growing season. Follow our Ultimate Fall Landscaping Checklist to get your landscape ready for Winter:

1. Weed Your Landscape Beds:

Removing grass and weeds from flower beds is a quick way to improve the overall appearance of your home.

2. Collect and Dispose of Leaves:

Fallen leaves in landscape beds are the perfect places for pests to settle in for the winter. Plus, a heavy layer of leaves left on a lawn can kill the grass and lead to bare patches.

3. Trim/Prune Shrubs & Trees:

Trim any dead or damaged branches and cut back overgrown trees and bushes.

4. Cut Back Perennials:

Most perennials are done blooming for the season and can be cut back in the fall. This will promote plant health and keep your landscape looking neat and tidy.

5. Remove Spring & Summer Annuals:

Unlike perennials, annuals do not come back from season to season. Pull them up, roots and all, and add them to your compost pile.

6. Plant Bulbs, Shrubs, & Fall Annuals:

Believe it or not, some plants do best when planted in the fall. If you want to add new shrubs or spring bulbs, now is the best time to get them in the ground. Fall annuals are also a great addition to keep some color in your landscape when other plants die back.

7. Winterize and Pack Away Fountains, Birdbaths, and Patio Furniture:

While some birdbaths and fountains are manufactured to remain outside for the winter, precautions may still be required for harsher weather conditions.

8. Clean Tools and Store Them:

Don’t toss your tools in the shed and forget about them until spring! Give them a good cleaning and add a light coat of oil to prevent rust during the cold season.
