Fall Color Beyond Mums: Landscape Ideas for Seasonal Interest

2 min read

When those first cooler evenings arrive in Eastern Pennsylvania, it’s hard not to think about mums. They’re colorful, familiar, and one of those sure signs that fall has arrived. But if you want to give your landscape a little more personality this season, there are plenty of ways to go beyond the traditional pot of mums.

Foliage and Texture

Fall is actually one of the best times to let foliage and texture do some of the work. Ornamental grasses that have been quietly filling out all summer really start to shine this time of year. Their feathery plumes, warm golden tones, and movement look especially good in the softer autumn light. They’re a great addition around patios, along walkways, or mixed into foundation beds, and many continue adding texture well into winter.

Beyond Flowers

Trees and shrubs can bring even more fall color to the landscape. Look beyond flowers and consider plants whose leaves turn shades of red, orange, burgundy, and gold. Shrubs that produce colorful berries are another great choice. They add an extra pop of color as summer blooms begin to fade, and some varieties have the added benefit of providing food for visiting birds.

That doesn’t mean you have to give up flowers altogether. Late-blooming perennials like asters, sedum, and goldenrod can keep the color going well into fall. Mixed among ornamental grasses and changing foliage, they become part of the overall landscape instead of having to carry the whole show.

Don't Forget About Containers

And don’t forget about containers and outdoor living spaces. Fall is a great excuse to freshen up pots around your front entrance, patio, or walkways. Try combining seasonal plants with ornamental grasses, colorful foliage, and a few natural accents. Pumpkins, gourds, branches, pinecones, and decorative grasses can add layers of color and texture without requiring a major landscape project.

The key is to mix things up a little. Mums can certainly still be part of the picture, but combining flowers with grasses, colorful foliage, berries, and natural accents creates a fall landscape that feels richer, lasts longer, and offers something new to enjoy as the season changes.

And the best part is, these choices don’t just pay off in the fall. The same plants that bring colorful foliage, berries, and texture in October can add interest through the winter, come back to life in spring, and complement summer blooms. With a little planning, you can enjoy a landscape that changes with the seasons instead of one that only shines for a few weeks each year.
